Sigma FC making waves

SAAC Charter Academy Sigma FC has been front and centre in Canadian Soccer news this off-season.

Last week the CSA named its roster for the CONCACAF Men’s U20 FIFA World Cup Qualifying tournament in Jamaica. Two Sigma Academy grads – Cyle Larin and Chris Nanco – were named to the squad hoping to qualify for the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand.

Larin followed this up by signing a Generation Adidas Contract with MLS. Cyle is expected to be a top two pick in the MLS SuperDraft to be held January 15 in Philadelphia.

Today, Men’s National Team Head Coach named his squad for theteam’s first camp of 2015.  Included in the squad are Manjrekar James and Jonathan Grant, two former Academy players with Sigma FC. The camp will include two international friendlies vs Iceland.

A native of Brampton Ontario, Cyle Larin has been a member of Sigma FC since 2006 where he started as a 11 year old. Larin split his time between UConn and Sigma, where he featured in the academy’s inaugural season in League1 Ontario. 2014 was also the year where Larin made his debut with the senior Canadian national team, being called up by head coach Benito Floro to numerous camps and friendlies including the October 2014 friendly versus Colombia.

Chris Nanco is a Junior at Syracuse University and is one of the original members of SIGMA FC starting in 2007. Over the years he has had the opportunity to represent Canada at the U17 World Cup in 2011 and train at some of Europe’s most prestigious clubs.

Jonathan Grant has been with Sigma since 2009. He is a technical player with speed and an ability to beat players at will. He played with Sigma FC’s League1 Ontario side in 2014.

Manjrekar James is a 6-foot-4 defender from North York, who came to train with Sigma as a 16 year old. He previously been on trial in Spain with Real Mallorca of the Spain’s La Liga, and later spent time training at SC Paderborn 1st team of the Bundesliga 2. He is currently playing in the Hungarian First Division with Pécsi Mecsek Football Club

Five Academy Grads Make NCAA Top 100 Freshman List

5 players from Sigma FC made the Top 100 NCAA Soccer Freshman List put out by Top Drawer Soccer in the US.

Most impressive is that only 7 Canadians in total made the cut.  It is a testament to Sigma FC and the Academy system as a whole that these players were able to develop to such a high level in this environment. SAAC would like to congratulate these players on their successful transition to the College game.
